A stolen phone number can unlock email, banking, and crypto accounts in minutes. How to protect your mobile identity from SIM swap attacks.
In a SIM swap, an attacker convinces your mobile carrier to move your phone number to a device they control. From that moment, every text-message security code goes to them.
Executives and wealthy individuals are targeted because their numbers are often discoverable and the accounts behind them are valuable. The attack takes minutes and is frequently completed with information found online.
Start by adding a carrier account PIN and port-out lock, and ask the carrier to flag the account for in-person verification only. Then remove text messages as a recovery method wherever possible, replacing them with hardware security keys or an authenticator app.
Consider a separate, unpublished number used only for account recovery, and keep your primary number off public profiles and data broker sites.
Finally, know the warning sign: a phone that suddenly shows 'No service' without explanation. Treat it as an incident and call your security team immediately.
